Delhi Government’s bus lane enforcement drive crosses 100 days mark, currently in its 106th day of implementation
As of 15th July 2022, 545 vehicles lifted/towed for improper parking in the bus lanes during the drive
50,000+ no parking challans issued against improper parking on the spot and 1,810 challans issued against the bus drivers which includes 713 cluster, 939 DTC and 158 other buses
Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot today undertook a combined inspection of bus lanes and Bus Queue Shelters (BQS) between Ghazipur to Dilshad Garden and made a surprise visit to Anand Vihar ISBT to take stock of passenger facilities and bus operation at the terminal. He was also accompanied by the senior officials of Transport Department, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) Ltd., Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) Ltd, Public Works Department (PWD), and enforcement staffers on ground.
Starting from Ghazipur X-ing, Shri Gahlot was pleased to see the plying of buses in their dedicated lanes and stopping at the dedicated spots in front of the bus stops. During the inspection of Bus Queue Shelters (BQS), he observed a few BQSs with missing bus route numbers on the display board of the shelter. He directed officials to ensure that display boards at each BQS across the city should be updated with the most updated route numbers. During the inspection of the bus lane between Ghazipur X-ing to Anand Vihar ISBT, he also instructed officials to ensure clearance of bus lanes in case it has been occupied by private vehicles, through sensitization and use of enforcement measures.
During the inspection between Ghazipur to Dilshad Garden, Shri Gahlot also stopped at Anand Vihar ISBT and conducted a surprise inspection of various facilities at the terminal. The inspection inside the Anand Vihar ISBT included a check on the retail shops which seemed to have expanded more than the actual provided area resulting in blocking of pathways for bus users. While inspecting the ISBT on foot, Shri Gahlot also instructed all bus drivers to keep their buses clean both from inside and outside for the convenience of the citizens. To assist bus travellers at Anand Vihar ISBT, he instructed the concerned authorities to open new enquiry centres, if required, at more visible locations. DTC, DIMTS and DTIDC have been directed to work together and ensure smooth movement of buses at Entry and Exit to avoid long bus queues. Additionally officials have also been instructed to ensure good public hygiene at both seating and utility areas within the ISBT.
Delhi Government had started an intensive enforcement drive for buses and goods carriage vehicles on 1st April 2022 to enhance road safety, reduce congestion and improve the overall bus system to enable higher passenger loads and improved trip services. During the ongoing enforcement drive, the entire city DTC and cluster buses have been plying on designated bus lanes and halting only at the bus stops designated for the purpose. No other vehicles have been allowed to stop/park in the bus lanes. However, auto-rickshaws, taxies, three-wheeled goods, and all private vehicles have been allowed to pick and drop passengers at points about 75 metres ahead of designated bus queue shelters (BQS). Any parking in the bus lanes by such vehicles will be deemed a violation of permit conditions/rules framed under the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), 1988 as applicable.
As of 15.07.2022, a total of 51,812 challans have been issued by the Transport department for various categories of bus lane violation. These include 1810 challans to bus drivers for bus lane violation and 50,002 challans to private vehicles owners for parking in bus lanes. A total of 545 vehicles have also been lifted/towed for improper parking in the bus lane under the drive. The enforcement staff/teams will continue issuing challans by imposing fine/penalty under the relevant provisions/rules in violations of the Bus Lane Discipline.
Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot further stated, “What started as an idea in April to ensure city buses to ply in the dedicated bus lanes; has now transformed into a mission to make bus travel more convenient for our citizens and remove congestion on the road. The drive is now not only limited to lane discipline but has given us the opportunity to review the existing infrastructure and facilities for bus users in Delhi. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal, we want to ensure that all aspects of public transportation whether it is BQS, bus marking on lanes, terminals, buses are modernised for convenience and safety of citizens.”
